Composting Worms
Red Wigglers, European Nightcrawlers and African Nightcrawlers are all great composting worms and do well in worm bins. Red Wigglers are a smaller worm that can withstand a large range of temperatures. They are a great composter and reproduce quickly. The European Nightcrawlers are about the size of a gummy worm. They also do well in a large range of temperatures similiar to the Red Wigglers. They are good eaters but reproduce slower than the Red Wigglers and like their bins on the moist side. African Nightcrawlers can out eat and out reproduce the other two worms in this category. They are more of a tropical worm in that they need to be kept warmer (50+, optimally over 70). They are great for apartment dwellers and anyone else who wants to keep their worms indoors (depending on where you live)
We have recently added Alabama Jumpers to this category. However, they are not a great bin worm but are great for your garden. They will live happily in clay and sandy soils topped with organic matter. They will help loosen your soil and deposit castings at the same time. Place these gems straight into your garden.
